My daughter walked into the room and asked if she could use the car. I fished the keys out of my pocket and while I fished we talked. I asked her how work was. She briefly described her day. Then my daughter plucked the keys out of my hand, turned and walked away. Ouch. As soon as she got what she wanted she left. Does God say “ouch” when I do that to Him?
I’ve been known to pray and ask God for things …stay in His presence until I get the answer …then turn and go on with my life. Waiting to see how God answers our prayers can be tough. But I wonder if God is treasuring time with us while we wait.
When I think about it, what happens between asking and getting – for car keys or God’s provision – is called relationship.
In a relationship there’s a pattern and rhythm to our lives together. I want to know what my kids think and what they care about. Do you believe God wants to hang out with me and you even more than I want to hang out with my kids? He does.
Is He disappointed when we walk away? Again, yes. Jesus looked at the people of Jerusalem and said, “…How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!” Matt 22:37 He longs to be with us.
God has “given me the car keys”; He’s answered my prayer. This time we walk together.
Let’s develop a habit of spending time with God even on days we don’t need things. Grab some coffee and your bible. God is longing for time with you.
” Call on me in prayer and I will answer you. I will show you great and mysterious things which you still do not know about.” Jer 33:3
