Lately I can’t stop thinking about this video. It’s an old Ted talk by Derek Shivers – How to Start a Movement. It shows a shirtless crazy guy dancing at an outdoor festival. If you haven’t seen it it’s only 3 minutes long and I posted it below.
The shirtless guy starts dancing. Then a true, unrehearsed flash mob just sort of happens. Shirtless Guy is the leader.
We hear a lot about leadership in the church; leaders are important. I’d like to be one but you almost need to redefine leadership for that discussion to apply to me.
I’m not a born leader and I don’t want to start a movement. I am, however, an excellent follower. I can follow my boss when she has a good (or even OK) idea. And I try to follow Jesus wherever He leads.
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” That’s a bold thing for a man to say. Paul had just been spelling out how not to offend people by what you eat. He was telling them to do everything “for the glory of Christ” so that others could get to know Jesus too. Am I allowed to be as bold as Paul? I’m following Jesus. Do you want to join me? We can all follow Jesus together. Those of us who’ve been following a while can show others how this works. We can love boldly like Jesus did. We can follow Jesus and find God’s heart; we can discover the things He cares about. Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through me. If you have known me, you will know my Father too. And from now on you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7)
I think it’s a good idea to do what Paul did. If you’ve been following Jesus a while, let others join in.
Derek Shiver says, “Have the courage to follow and show others how to follow.” Where do you think following Jesus leads? I thought about posting what I think is important to God but I’d rather know what you think. If you’re following Jesus where has it led you? What do you think is important to God? Would you let me know in the comments?
